In their last few billion years, the intelligent species of the universe came together and slowly merged into one being, as individuals used their godlike technology to upgrade their minds and join them together in this last ditch effort to process all the information in the universe and think. In other words, the one thing they couldn't solve was the heat death of the universe, brought about by disorder, bleeding the universe dry of usable energy until nothing could happen anywhere ever again. That doing anything required using energy and dissipating at least some of it as heat-a mess of kinetic energy scattered through matter essentially at random. That to organize anything meant creating disorder elsewhere. The one thing they couldn't solve was the end of the universe itself-the law of thermodynamics that stated that entropy must always increase to its maximum. Manhattans, essentially, through their own effort and experimentation and setbacks and learning and sacrifice and perseverance over the eons. In this previous universe, the most dominant species or group of species evolved and progressed technologically over time to the point where they were essentially deities with near-complete control over anything and everything they wished. It's not necessarily my headcanon, but I like the idea that they're survivors of a previous universe. As unicorns, again, the lack of manpower to control celestial bodies would mean that anyone with talent at magic would be taught hard so they could help (like Celestia said in S8E7 - she didn't get much chance to do anything other than study). If they were born as alicrons destined to control sun and moon, then it's obvious that they would be catapulted to the top of Equestria, with the greatest sorcerer as their teacher. So Harmony made it so that Celestia and Luna were born - either as alicorns or unicorns that would quickly discover their purpose.Ĭonsidering even in comics with young C/L they are alicorns, I'd opt for the former - but it could be cool to think that so few unicorns were left that they had to take young, talented unicorns to help move celestial bodies. Ponies were in a for a bad time because it was crushing for unicorns to keep moving the sun and moon. I'm convinced that the force of Harmony in Equestria has a will behind it (not really sentience but a sort of singular thought - the Map being as it is makes me believe so).
